In galleries and museums audio descriptions of artworks make art more accessible. They describe the details of an artwork so the work can be imagined accurately. During the pandemic there was a big uptake of audio descriptions and digitising of collections to ensure people still had access to public art collections while isolating. They are helpful for those wanting to know more about art, folks with disabilities, schools, and people who may not be able to physically access galleries.
I am part of the team of people who work on delivering audio descriptions for collections artworks at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. My role has been to contribute to research and writing. We recently won an excellence award at Council for this work. The link below will take you to the gallery’s audio descriptions page.
